01/07 Initial research - Sir John Soane Museum
A museum of pointless objects.
Although not an example from the Gilded age, I visited the Sir John Soane Museum. A house filled with the most rare and exotic artefacts but hugely overshadowed by more rare and exotic artefacts. It felt like a space show casing one man’s addiction for stuff and consuming more, buying something new until that became boring and he had to move onto the next thing. What was a thousand year old elaborately carved white alabaster sarcophagus for the pharo Seti, was now just stuff and in the way of stuff.
