New Coal - Concept
This is the concept behind my coal project, I’m still working on execution but this is the general idea.
Coal doesn’t have to become redundant when we no longer need to burn it for fuel.
Hidden deep inside coal’s chemical make-up is the super material, Graphene. Research is currently underway to extract this Graphene and if it proves to be successful, Britain - and in particular it’s working class mining towns - will become the source of this new material future.
So the race is on to capitalise Graphene yet, like we have see many times before, it is those with the power and financial resource that are in first place to do so, regardless of the people and communities that were built on top of it.
In this new story of coal, the working class mining towns join the race, ultimately taking a piece of the Graphene revolution for themselves. This leads to a new future for coal, where mining towns become the silicone valley of the carbon world and the miners become the captains of their own industry.
These illustrations hint at the future fiction stories, and become artefacts/blueprints that represent the narrated events.
